Robert Duthie – Councillor Candidate Town of Orangeville
How long have you been an Orangeville Resident?
I moved to Orangeville 3 ½ years ago looking for a smaller quieter community. There was a lot to attract someone to Orangeville; great restaurants, nature trails and plenty of art and culture combined with a strong sense of community.
What would you change and/or improve in Orangeville?
That’s a complex question as I’m advocating a strict period of austerity. I believe we’ve spent ourselves into a corner and have lost the right to expect improvements at least over the short to mid-range time period. One area I would like to see improvements in is GO bus service which at present is virtually non-existent. It really makes people over reliant on their vehicles.
If you were to receive a million dollar grant for the Town of Orangeville, what would you do with it and why?
I think I would invest that into something in the arts community. I’m thinking a bigger theatre that can accommodate larger audiences and more extravagant productions. A gallery would also be a welcome addition.
What is your favourite place in Orangeville and why?
I would have to say the trails around Island Lake. I like to take the dog there for walks and it offer a taste of nature close to home. The downtown strip along Broadway would be a close second.
I was a Sergeant with the Toronto Police. A position I retired from in June of this year. During my 36 years there I held various positions including many years as a detective investigating sex crimes and child abuse cases. My wife Meredith wholly supports my bid for council. Together we have 3 adult children and 1 teenager in a blended family. Along with my bid for office I am working towards another goal of completing my BA in psychology.
