Kelly Zammit – Councillor Candidate Town of Orangeville
How long have you been an Orangeville Resident?
I have been an Orangeville resident for 21 years. Raised my daughters here and am happy to work here as well.
What would you change and/or improve in Orangeville?
What would I change? That’s difficult to say because I love it here so much. It has the small town feel, yet you can get almost everything you need right at your fingertips. I do want the dynamics of town council to improve that’s for sure. We are going to have more new faces on council, than not in the next term. I sure hope we are led by the individual who has the best political experience and knowledge about this town since we will be on quite a learning curve. This will give us the smoothest transition. So let’s have a great team for the next term and see great things happen.
If you were to receive a million dollar grant for the Town of Orangeville, what would you do with it and why?
If I were to receive a million dollar grant for Orangeville, the first thing that comes to mind is help out the food bank and family transition place. We can never do enough for these wonderful organizations that help our residents in need. With the remainder, I’d put it in reserves and look into where it could be most utilized. I believe in doing the research to find out if there is a need for it somewhere and if there’s nothing pressing in a need, do we want to spend it somewhere towards a town event? And sometimes it’s just nice to keep in the reserves instead of trying to spend it just because it’s there. We must keep in mind that in today’s world, a million dollars doesn’t stretch as far as it used to. It must be carefully considered.
What is your favourite place in Orangeville and why?
My favourite place in orangeville is my home. May sound silly, but because I choose to live here, I get access to all that Orangeville has to offer. How can I pick one thing that’s my favourite. There are just too many great things in this wonderful town. So my home gives me the best place to be, to have all of Orangeville at my fingertips.
I’m a very proud single mom of two wonderful daughters. Cassie who’s 19 and off to University this fall for psychology and Haylie who’s 13, a straight A student and a competitive gymnast. I’ve called Orangeville home for over 20 years now. I run a successful esthetic business from my home and am also a property manager.
Along side of my career, I have spent time volunteering, been a part of event planning committees, and was the person who spearheaded bringing line dancing to Orangeville, which has been running successfully for over four years now. I have been part of a political campaign team and attend town council meetings regularly.
What do I want to see for the 2018 term for Orangeville? A council that can work as a team, yet can still bring individual thoughts and ideas to the table. A council that can work through conflict using professional discussion. I want to see respect for each other and our community. I believe this is possible by voting for the candidates who’s character traits and skill set together, can handle four years of making important decisions on a professional level for all of Orangeville and its tax payers.
I would also like to see our tax dollars used wisely. I take money management very seriously. As a single mom, home owner and being self employed, I have proudly lived a debt free life for many years. I don’t believe in wasting money and have the skills to make smart financial choices. I will use these skills and mind set to help keep Councils spending of tax dollars in check.
Keep in mind these are my personal tax dollars, as well as yours and am not in favour of wasting our hard earned money. Why would I want my personal pocket book affected negatively along side of yours? Doesn’t make sense.
Over the years I have been quite vocal on social media speaking up for what I believe in. I always back up my comments with facts. I stand up for what I believe in and am open to being this voice for the people of Orangeville too. I am not afraid to address stressful situations head on, all with the voice of reason. I have always faced adversity with strength and resolve to achieve a positive outcome.
Our last council unfortunately has been very divided. If you’re aware of the dynamics, it’s quite simple to understand why. I’m asking you all to please look closely at all candidates, including myself and not only choose according to their platform, but at the compatibility of all members voted in having a smoother working relationship this coming term. Let’s see what Orangeville’s town council can accomplish with a team that has only one agenda. An agenda of putting Orangeville first.
This next council needs to be a team that works productively together. I have the skills, the ethics, the integrity and passion for this great town to make that happen.
With your vote, let’s make this happen.
