John Rutter – Area Councillor Candidate for Ward 2 (Town of Caledon)

John N. RutterHow long have you been a Caledon Resident?

My wife, our 2 dogs, our 1 cat and myself moved to the beautiful suburbs of Terra Cotta (Caledon) some 10 years ago now (my where has the time gone). We moved here from Mississauga and have never looked back and more importantly have never had any doubts that this was the right move for us.

What would you change and/or improve in Caledon?

Well I would really like to take a hard look at the relationship between Caledon and the other 2 Municipalities that make up Peel Region, meaning Mississauga and Brampton. As I drive around Caledon (north of Old School Road) and then drive through Brampton or Mississauga I can’t help but ask the question “What is it that we do in fact supposedly have in common?” Then as I drive further north through Dufferin or Wellington counties I can’t help but think to myself ” Hmmm– this seems to look and feel a lot more like the Caledon that I live in and have come to passionately Love!

You know our today’s politicians throw around words like “uniqueness”  or “Let’s build Caledon the way we want to build it ” and they turn around and do the exact opposite.

As I go out there knocking on doors I am finding a feeling from some residents (and yes I do use a plural) expressed in comments such as ” Let’s redefine the borders of Caledon. Let’s give everything south of Old School Road to Brampton or Mississauga respectively and designate everything north of Old School Road as being Caledon!”

Oh to be able to turn the clock back! I’m “Just Saying “, scratch the surface and you might be shocked at what you find!

If you were to receive a million dollar grant for the Town of Caledon, what would you do with it and why?

I would invest the money and then use the principle and whatever profit ( based on my shrewd investments) to provide additional funding for what I call HELP organizations such as Caledon Community Services or Meals On Wheels.

I have been a volunteer driver for CCs for some 1 1/2 years now and an active participant in one of the many MOW Community based programs for approx. the same time frame.

It is from these experiences and involvement in many other community activities that I have come to realize the HUGE part that these types of organizations play in the lives of Seniors , the lonely, the autistic, the disabled, the mentally challenged and many other groups of Caledon residents.

They play an immeasurable role in the promotion and maintenance of our “Aging In Place” initiative.

God bless them all and I wish I had a million dollars so I could put my money where my mouth is!

What is your favourite place in Caledon and why?

Close your eyes! It is a beautiful, sunny, hot, humid day in rural Caledon. You just happen to have, under your arms, an inflated tube. And low and behold you also by some miracle happen to have a paddle and there waiting for you and your tube, is the Credit River. You could actually be anywhere like Terra Cotta, Cheltenham, Inglewood or anywhere in between.

You have made arrangements with your wife (or appropriate responsible individual) to meet you in ” The Glenn” in some 2-3 hours. Now make your way down to the river (be careful of the rocks), place the tube on the water, grasp the paddle in 1 hand and gently lower yourself onto the tube.

Now OPEN YOUR EYES and enjoy the scenery, the serenity and CALEDON !!
