James Jackson – Councillor Candidate Town of Orangeville
How long have you been an Orangeville Resident?
I have been a resident of Orangeville since I was 10 (1979), I have moved in and out a few times, bought a house and sold it now live at my parents place looking after my aging dad and a 8 yr old as well I am newly engaged.
What would you change and/or improve in Orangeville?
That is easy – Accessibility is my main goal, for I am disabled and an Ambassador for M.S Canada.
No one wants to be left out and currently, many are due to the lack of accessibility or unsafe conditions due to poor planning. I can bring about a different view thanks to my personal situation. I will work with those who are planning to update or build with these in mind. I have many different ideas to rework events so that they are in fact more accessible whether it’s transportation around the event or even closer parking.
If you were to receive a million dollar grant for the Town of Orangeville, what would you do with it and why?
My first thought is to bank it to the things we desperately need example the flooding in town is just going to get worse we need a direct approach to address and fix that.
I feel that the town has environmental issues due to the new developments that have gone up rapidly without thinking long-term about where the water is going to go. We need to work with developers, engineers, and all levels of government regarding potential flooding in new and older developments and come up with new ideas and solutions to give the water somewhere to go.
We also have quite a large homeless population in Orangeville that needs to be addressed. I have been in talks with the YMCA to come to Orangeville and they can help Orangeville address homelessness to the county with us. We currently have nowhere for men to seek shelter (with or without families) when needed in Orangeville. The YMCA will also help with many programs i.e. seniors, disabled people, youth, shelter, etc.
What is your favourite place in Orangeville and why?
My home and why, because it is the place I find peace!
