Brian Dunn Area Councillor Candidate for Ward 2 (Town of Caledon)
If elected how/what would you do to improve Active Transportation within Caledon and how would you improve existing connections between communities?
Active Transportation within Caledon is an ongoing concern, i would want to have transportation between the villages / hamlets in the Town to unite the community and the town as a whole. That being said, I am not sure at this point what would be feasible for motor vehicles, shuttle buses, i would have to investigate further. Improving connections between communities is important, I would like to see more bike paths, hiking paths and the like created to bring our communities together. These paths would let people from all corners of Caledon get to see our great Town and connect with the communities within. Also I would have these pathways utilized year round, skiing and snowshoeing in the winter and biking, walking, hiking in the non-snowy months.
What will you do to bring in new business that can thrive in Caledon and how will you help existing small businesses succeed?
New business is vital to Caledon, As a small business owner in Caledon, I have seen the issues that can occur to make it harder for businesses to thrive. I would like to see a local first approach to businesses that are in our communities and for the Town to work together with the Chamber of Commerce to provide resources for the businesses. If we can show the world that Caledon is business friendly and that we care for our businesses the way we care for our people we will get the much needed business infrastructure to sustain and grow our Town both economically and responsibly.
There has been a lot of discussion with respect to truck traffic in Caledon and the danger it poses on our main roads. If elected what do you plan to do to address these concerns?
Traffic issues in the Town have been at the fore-front of many discussions, especially the high volume of truck traffic. We all know that trucks are vital to building new homes and businesses so we will never have no truck issues. We can crack down on enforcement of the trucking companies and the trucks on the roads in regards to overloading, speeding, and unlicensed loads/companies. We would have to work hard and forcefully to stop the illegal trucking depots that are across our Town and enforce the laws on them.
What will you do to ensure council works together in the new term?
I am a team player, I have been a hockey coach, a member of a franchise advisory committee (voted on by my peers) and on various other committees in my lifetime. I will use my philosophy of team work to have council work together, for me I look at council as a hockey team, each player (Councillor, Mayor) has to work together to win the game, but winning 1 game isn’t the end goal, it is to win the championship. Like hockey (and business) you don’t always see eye to eye with your teammates, however, one must listen and hear what the others are saying to form the right plan of attack that will help the team overall and in the long run. We were given 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason. We should listen twice as often and speak half as much.
Previous Questions and Answers:
How long have you been a Caledon resident?
I have been a resident of Caledon for 49 years, since birth, in fact I have always lived in Ward 2. I grew up on a farm on Heart Lake Road and moved to Valleywood 16 years ago.
What would you change and / or improve in Caledon?
The changes / improvements that I would like to see in the Town is the relation that the Town has with itself, meaning that the east and west sides of the Town must start to get along and work together for the better of all. I want a Town that works together for the residents.
If you were to receive a million dollar grant for the Town of Caledon, what would you do with it and why?
In this day and age a million dollars doesn’t go as far as it used to in the past, that being said, it can still a lot of good. I would use part of it to help with giving the children the opportunity to participate in minor sports, hockey, baseball, soccer, lacrosse etc…, also i would like to see part of it go towards the aging community and supporting them in affordable accommodations, and cleaning up the green spaces.
What is your favourite place in Caledon and why?
My favorite place (s) in the Town would have to be the arenas, and recreation facilities. Being an avid hockey and ball hockey fan (and player), I truly enjoy the activities at the arenas, from minor hockey, to adult rec hockey, to lacrosse, and ball hockey.
