I know as some of you read this you will judge, and words such as insensitive and unwilling to help those in need with cross your mind, but before you do …. think twice!
Any person would take care of their family first before they help others so why has our government forgotten to take care of our own before helping others? One such example is dental care for our senior citizens and those under government dental programs.
With respect to Canadian seniors, depending on the region they are living in, they have to wait anywhere from 6 months to 3 years for dental treatment and some are told that there is no funding left in the programs. As dental treatment can be expensive this leaves seniors in pain, unable to chew and eat their food and in some cases oral infections affect the rest of their health.
With respect to people with government dental plans, the government pays such a low percentage of the dental fee guides, in some cases as low as 30-40% of the cost, that it actually costs dental offices to see these patients so a lot of them don’t and tell patients that they do not accept government programs.
With this being said, did you know that the government pays 100% of the covered services for patients under the Refugee Interim Federal Health Program? These are the same services that other government programs, such as Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) and Ontario Works (OW), are covered at 30-40% of the actual cost.
I am not sure about you, but I find it hard to believe that there is money to be put into the interim program and no money to take care of our seniors and citizens in need.
I am all for helping others, but it can not be at the cost of someone else.
